How to Wash a Car

Regularly washing your car is a great way to keep it looking like new, but there are other benefits that you may not be aware of. When done correctly, a car wash will help to protect the exterior paint as well as minimize surface imperfections. In this guide from Honda of Greeley, we’ll walk you through the proper way to wash your car so it’ll always be looking its best on the roads in and around Ft. Collins.

A Quick Wash or the Full Package?

If your car is new or has been recently waxed and polished, you’ll only have to do a quick wash and wax. If your vehicle has been sitting outside, exposed to the elements for an extended period, it’ll need a more extensive cleaning and polishing to be properly protected.

Rinse & Wash

The first thing you should do is rinse the car to remove loose dirt and debris. Then, using car wash mitts and drying cloths, wipe down the surface of the vehicle to clean it more thoroughly. When moving on to clean the windows, make sure to use an ammonia-free solution that is specifically intended to be used on cars. To clean the wheels and tires use a low-strength, acid-free pH balanced aluminum cleaner and apply as directed.

Remove Bumps & Apply Compound

With a clay bar, gently buff away any tree sap or other contaminants on your car’s surface. You can also apply a rubbing compound with a dual-action polisher. This will help to smooth out any small scratches beneath the surface. You will usually need to apply 2-4 coats of rubbing compound to get the job done right.

Apply Polish (If Needed)

Here at Honda of Greeley, we recommend that Loveland-area drivers use a dual-action polisher. The special oils in the polish will make your car look sleek and glossy. An orbital buffer or a soft towel should be used to apply the polish. While orbital buffers are faster, they give you less control over the finished look, and if any debris manages to get between the pad and your car, it can end up scratching the paint.

Wax Your Car

Car wax improves the appearance of your vehicle and helps to protect the paint from harmful UV rays. The two most common types of car wax are carnauba and polymer. Polymer wax is a bit more expensive than carnauba, but it doesn’t haze and doesn’t need to set for long periods.

How Often to Wash a Car

How often you will need to wash your car depends on how and where you drive. Do you just run errands around town, or do you take longer trips out on the highway? If you’re traveling from Greeley to Longmont for work, for example, we advise washing your car every two weeks and waxing it every six months. If you’re taking your Honda on an off-road adventures, you should clean it as soon as you can afterward.

How to Wash a Car: Tips

  • Cleaning Supplies: It’s important to use solutions that are specifically designed to protect your car’s paint, and when washing, use a natural sponge or wool mitt.
  • Washing: Use plenty of soap and clean the sponge with fresh water as you wash the car body, windows, tires, and wheels.
  • Drying: Air-drying your car can leave unsightly residue, water spots, and swirls. Use a chamois or terry-cloth towel to hand-dry the surface.
